Get ready for spoilers - we've got your full recap ready to go. Daenerys has a flying dragon but somehow it didn't ship with "arrow detection" mode? Queen Cersei is unquestionably evil but she doesn't use her advantage to slay her enemies? And Jon revealing to Sansa and Arya his real family lineage - one of the most integral plot points of the show - in a conversation that happens off screen? Are you kidding me?ĭon't even start me on the fact that Jon didn't pat Ghost.īut Game of Thrones has strong form on dropping serious drama in the second last episode of the season (think about the Red Wedding and the Battle of the Bastards). Last week's episode left a little to be desired. How many more of our favorites are going to die horrible deaths? And who will get to finally sit on the throne they've been gaming over for eight seasons? I’m all for suspense, but it’s lazy to artificially create it by having the good guys make arbitrarily dumb decisions for no reason, when they should very clearly know better.It's the second to last episode of Game of Thrones ever, and we still have so many questions. There were multiple experienced field strategists and combat veterans there: Jon, Tyrion, Varys, Grey Worm, Jorah, Davos, Jaime, Beric, Sandor, Royce, Theon, Tormund, Daenerys, and presumably a bunch of Northern lords and Dothraki captains. It’s not like we need some incredibly complex battle tactics, just some common sense. No guards posted in the crypts, or even just weapons available for the people there, despite all the fuss made about training civilians-men, women, and children-with them.ĭaenerys landing Drogon on the ground and not burning the dead, and then not immediately taking off again after failing to do that. No boiling oil or other incendiaries thrown down onto the wights scaling the walls, nor pole-arms or shields on the wall to defend the crenelations. Waiting until AFTER the wights have started crossing the trenches to “man the walls,” instead of having archers (and the trebuchets, had they been inside the castle like they should have been) continually shooting the dead while they were just standing there. The dragons, two honest-to-R’hllor WMDs, not being used to light up the fields until after the enemy has rushed their front lines. Placing the entirety of the elite shield-and-spear wielding infantry on the front lines, spaced apart instead of in phalanx formation, and sacrificed to guard the retreat of the general foot soldiers. Placing what seems to be nearly all of their total infantry in front of said obstacles, with only narrow corridors for retreat. Oh, and the trench being no more than a few feet wide and deep, and not getting lit until the middle of the battle. Only one line of trenches, spikes, and other obstacles at all. Trebuchets-the superior siege weapon-firing exactly once, positioned outside the castle, in FRONT of the infantry and obstacles, so that they are the first things overrun. Having ALL of the cavalry-LIGHT cavalry, at that-blindly charge to their deaths unsupported, into a literal fog of war, in a frontal charge, in no particular formation, before the enemy is even seen.
